Caring for uPVC windows and doors
uPVC needs no painting. A little regular cleaning keeps sashes moving smoothly and water draining away, and catches small problems early.
Frames and glass
- Wipe frames with a soft cloth, water and mild soap.
- Avoid abrasive pads, scouring powders and solvents, which can mark the surface or finish.
- Clean the glass as you would any window.
Tracks and drainage
- Vacuum or brush dust and grit out of sliding tracks regularly; in dusty seasons, more often.
- Check that the small drainage slots at the bottom of the frame are not blocked, so rainwater can run out.
Hardware and seals
- Operate handles and locks regularly so they do not stiffen.
- Keep hinges and moving parts free of dust.
- Look at the rubber seals from time to time; they should sit evenly in the frame.
Mesh
Brush or vacuum mesh gently and wipe its guide rails.
When to ask for help
If a sash drags, drops, will not lock or lets water in after cleaning, ask about maintenance. Do not force a sash that is stuck.
